Next-Gen OTT Transformation for Leading National Telco

About Project

This project focused on transforming a legacy OTT streaming ecosystem used by millions of subscribers across iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. The client operated a large TV service with live channels, VOD content, and catch-up functionality, but their existing applications suffered from playback instability, outdated UX, and a brittle architecture that prevented further development. The engagement centered around three major transformations: migrating to a new high-performance streaming vendor, redesigning the user experience across all Apple platforms, and rebuilding the internal architecture into a modular, maintainable system. Over the course of a year, the platform was stabilized, modernized, and prepared for faster future evolution.

About Client

The client is a leading national telecommunications and media provider in the Middle East, delivering large-scale TV and streaming services to a wide subscriber base. Their platform includes live broadcasting, an extensive video-on-demand library, and multi-device access for end users.

Challenges

The legacy applications were built on an outdated architecture with duplicated logic across platforms and heavy technical debt. The previous streaming vendor struggled with performance, leading to buffering, quality drops, and unreliable playback. The user interface was also outdated and inconsistent across devices, making content discovery difficult and frustrating, particularly on Apple TV. Critical issues such as authentication loops on tvOS remained unresolved for a long time due to the fragile codebase. The client needed not only visual modernization but deep technical restructuring to restore stability, improve user trust, and allow their internal team to continue developing the platform without constant regressions.

Goal

  • 1
    Stabilize Streaming Performance

Replace the legacy streaming vendor and ensure reliable adaptive playback across devices.

  • 2
    Modernize the User Experience

Redesign the interface to match modern OTT standards and improve content discovery.

  • 3
    Rebuild the Architecture for Maintainability

Eliminate duplicated logic and create a modular, shared core across platforms.

  • 4
    Restore Platform Reliability and Trust

Fix long-standing critical issues and reduce regressions during future development.

Solution

Devios joined the project in a Tech Lead role, driving architectural decisions and ensuring cross-platform consistency across iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS. We managed the migration to a new streaming vendor using modern HLS protocols and enterprise-grade DRM integration to ensure secure, adaptive playback even under unstable network conditions. At the architectural level, we introduced a modular “shared core” strategy, extracting networking, authentication, player management, and analytics into a unified framework used by all Apple platforms. This significantly reduced duplication and allowed fixes and features to propagate instantly across apps. On the UX side, we redesigned the interface for both mobile and TV, aligning the design language and heavily leveraging Apple TV’s Focus Engine to create a native, intuitive navigation experience. This resolved long-standing usability issues and eliminated critical login loops that previously affected users. The result was a stable, modern OTT platform with improved playback quality, better user experience, and a technical foundation that allows the client’s team to move faster with significantly less risk.
